When P1850 is stored, the module has detected an open (broken or disconnected) electrical path in the monitored circuit.

Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.

The transfer case shift motor on an electric shift four wheel drive system carries a contact plate, a multi track encoder that reports motor position to the 4WD control module through several discrete channels so it can confirm the selected range such as two wheel drive, four wheel drive high, and four wheel drive low. Contact Plate B is one of these feedback channels, and the module reads the combination of all channels to know exactly where the shift motor is positioned.
