Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 banks 1 & 2 signals reversed (wrong wiring connections)
P1153 — Heated Oxygen Sensor 2 banks 1 & 2 signals reversed (wrong wiring connections)
System: Powertrain | Type: Manufacturer-Specific | Make: Volkswagen
P1153 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for Volkswagen vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.
When P1153 is stored, the module has detected a sensor-related fault — the reported value from the named sensor is out of spec.
Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.
P1153 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.
The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the upstream oxygen sensors on Bank 1 and Bank 2 separately so it can control fuelling for each bank. DTC P1153 is stored when the ECM detects that the Bank 1 and Bank 2 oxygen sensor signals appear to be reversed, so the response it expects from one bank is arriving from the other. The usual cause is the sensor connectors or wiring being crossed between banks, often after a sensor replacement or harness repair. With the signals swapped the ECM corrects the wrong bank, which can cause rough running, poor fuel economy, and an illuminated check engine lam...
