P1603 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for Toyota vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.
Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.
P1603 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.
The engine control module continuously monitors crankshaft position sensor pulses alongside the ignition switch state to distinguish a normal, driver commanded shutdown from an unintended one. DTC P1603 is recorded when engine speed falls to zero while the ignition remains on and the module had no instruction to stop the engine, in other words when the engine has stalled by itself. This is a history code by nature, logged after the event to tell the technician a stall occurred rather than to identify what caused it, so it will frequently be present with no fault detectable at the time of inspe...
