The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) energises the fuel pump relay to supply battery voltage to the in tank fuel pump module and continuously monitors the voltage on the pump power feed circuit. On modern Ford vehicles this is often done through a dedicated Fuel Pump Driver Module (FPDM) that receives a duty cycle command from the PCM and drives the pump directly, returning a feedback monitor signal.
