Traction control works by braking a spinning wheel, and to do that the hydraulic modulator must be able to build pressure at one wheel while the driver is not touching the brake pedal. It does this with a set of solenoid valves in each hydraulic channel, typically an isolation valve and a shuttle or changeover valve alongside the normal inlet and outlet valves used for anti lock braking.
