The vehicle cut out while driving on a trip. After waiting around 20 minutes it would start and drive again, then do the same thing.

The customer had requested that an in tank fuel filter be fitted. After that work the engine would idle for around two seconds from start then cut out. Further questioning of the customer established that the original fault occurred roughly every 50 kilometres of highway driving, with a backfire and a puff of black smoke before the engine stopped, while driving around town was unaffected.
