The engine intermittently lost power and rattled, with the engine warning light coming on.

The vehicle had been run on unleaded petrol several months earlier. Both tanks had been drained, the filter replaced and fresh diesel added, and it then ran well until this fault developed. The new fault usually appeared within a minute of starting, with the scan-tool injection-timing value intermittently jumping to about 51 degrees.
