4WD low indicator circuit open or short to ground
P1808 — 4WD low indicator circuit open or short to ground
System: Powertrain | Type: Manufacturer-Specific | Make: Ford
P1808 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for Ford vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.
When P1808 is stored, the module has detected an open (broken or disconnected) electrical path in the monitored circuit; a short-circuit (voltage pulled to ground or to supply) in the monitored circuit; and a signal or supply voltage lower than the expected operating range.
Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.
P1808 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.
This DTC sets when the powertrain control module (PCM) or 4WD control module detects an open or a short to ground in the 4WD low indicator circuit. The module expects a specific voltage corresponding to 4WD low engagement, and if the circuit is open or shorted to ground for a calibrated duration the indicator cannot operate correctly and the fault is triggered. This affects the accurate display of 4WD low engagement in the instrument cluster. The driver may see the 4WD low indicator fail to light, stay on, or disagree with the actual transfer case range.
