Engine Coolant Temperature Intermittent High or Low
P1114 — Engine Coolant Temperature Intermittent High or Low
System: Powertrain | Type: Manufacturer-Specific | Make: GM
P1114 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for GM vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.
When P1114 is stored, the module has detected a signal or supply voltage lower than the expected operating range; and a signal or supply voltage higher than the expected operating range.
Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.
P1114 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.
The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is a negative temperature coefficient thermistor whose resistance falls as coolant warms, and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) reads the resulting signal voltage to monitor engine temperature for fuel injection, ignition timing, and cooling fan control. The PCM supplies a reference voltage through an internal resistor, so a high signal voltage corresponds to cold or open conditions and a low signal voltage to hot or shorted conditions. DTC P1114 sets when the PCM sees the ECT signal voltage jump intermittently high or low, rather than tracking smo...
