Engine Coolant Temperature Out of Range
P1119 — Engine Coolant Temperature Out of Range
System: Powertrain | Type: Manufacturer-Specific | Make: GM
P1119 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for GM vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.
When P1119 is stored, the module has detected a plausibility fault — the measured value is in the electrical range but is not consistent with expected operating behaviour.
Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.
P1119 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.
This DTC sets when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor signal is outside the valid operating range for a calibrated period of time. This typically means the voltage from the sensor is either too high or too low, corresponding to an implausibly low coolant temperature near minus 40 degrees F or an implausibly high one near 284 degrees F. The ECT sensor is an NTC thermistor the ECM relies on for fuel, spark, and cooling fan control, so an out of range signal can cause hard starting, poor driveability, and incorrect fan operation. The fault can...
