Code Information

On an electronically controlled diesel injection pump the Engine Control Module (ECM) compares the crankshaft position signal against the pump internal reference signal, commonly produced by an optical sensor inside the pump, in order to work out exactly when injection is actually occurring relative to top dead centre. From that comparison the ECM calculates a timing offset, which it uses to command the pump to advance or retard injection to the target value for the current engine speed and load.
