Fuel Solenoid response time too short
P1216 — Fuel Solenoid response time too short
System: Powertrain | Type: Manufacturer-Specific | Make: GM
P1216 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for GM vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.
When P1216 is stored, the module has detected a short-circuit (voltage pulled to ground or to supply) in the monitored circuit.
Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.
P1216 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.
On an electronically controlled diesel injection pump the fuel solenoid inside the pump is switched by the pump driver module, and its physical closure produces a detectable electrical signature that the Engine Control Module (ECM) uses to confirm exactly when injection began. The ECM measures the interval between commanding the solenoid and detecting that closure, and it compares that response time against a calibrated window. DTC P1216 is set when the measured solenoid response time is consistently shorter than expected, meaning the solenoid is closing faster than the ECM has been calibrated...
