The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is a negative temperature coefficient thermistor that reports coolant temperature to the Engine Control Module (ECM), which uses it to control fuel enrichment, ignition timing, cooling fan operation, and closed loop fuel feedback. The ECM supplies a reference voltage through an internal pull up resistor, so the signal voltage falls as the coolant gets hotter and the sensor resistance drops.
