Code Information

The ignition coil primary circuit carries the current that builds the coil's magnetic field, which then collapses to produce the secondary spark voltage. On these engines the primary is supplied with battery voltage and switched on the low side by an output stage, either integrated into the coil or housed in a separate ignition module, under the control of the Engine Control Module. Because current must flow through the primary winding for the module to have any control, the ECM can recognise a broken circuit from the absence of current when it commands dwell.
