Code Information

On Chrysler vehicles, P1281 sets when the PCM determines the engine coolant has not reached the minimum expected temperature within a calibrated time after a cold start, given the run time and ambient conditions. In practice this almost always means the engine is warming up too slowly, and a thermostat stuck open is by far the most common cause. Because the engine never reaches full operating temperature, the PCM may stay in open loop longer than normal, which hurts fuel economy, raises emissions, and can leave the heater output weak in cold weather.
