ECT Sensor Circuit Out of Self Test Range
P1116 — ECT Sensor Circuit Out of Self Test Range
System: Powertrain | Type: Manufacturer-Specific | Make: Mazda
P1116 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for Mazda vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.
When P1116 is stored, the module has detected a plausibility fault — the measured value is in the electrical range but is not consistent with expected operating behaviour; and a sensor-related fault — the reported value from the named sensor is out of spec.
Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.
P1116 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.
DTC P1116 is set when the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) finds the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor signal outside the expected window during the key on engine off self test routine. The ECT sensor is a negative temperature coefficient thermistor whose resistance, and therefore signal voltage, should fall within a defined band for a cold engine. If the signal sits too high or too low during the self test, indicating an open circuit, a short, or a sensor that has drifted out of tolerance, the PCM records P1116. Because the ECT value influences fuelling, idle, cooling fan operation, and ...
