Exhaust gas temperature sensors monitor exhaust temperature at key points through the aftertreatment system, typically before the turbocharger, before the oxidation catalyst, and either side of the diesel particulate filter. Most are negative temperature coefficient thermistors whose resistance falls as temperature rises, with the ECM reading the resulting voltage across a pull up resistor to calculate temperature.
