Battery goes flat and the tail/lift gate or rear hatch opens and closes at random without any input.

The automatic rear hatch indeed seemed to have a mind of its own, it randomly opens and shuts, sometimes it only opens a small amount, sometimes all the way and then it shuts. Does not do its little dance with the engine running, only with the engine off.
