When P1840 is stored, the module has detected a short-circuit (voltage pulled to ground or to supply) in the monitored circuit.

Code Information

This DTC is specific to a short to battery voltage in the transfer case shift motor circuit. The control module monitors the voltage on the shift motor control lines and expects defined transitions during a commanded shift. DTC P1840 sets when battery voltage appears on a motor control line at a time it should be inactive or grounded, indicating an unintended connection to power. The condition can cause uncommanded motor movement or trigger the module circuit protection, so the transfer case may shift incorrectly, refuse to shift, or set a four wheel drive warning light.
