P1846 — Transfer case contact Plate A circuit open
System: Powertrain | Type: Manufacturer-Specific | Make: Ford
P1846 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for Ford vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.
When P1846 is stored, the module has detected an open (broken or disconnected) electrical path in the monitored circuit.
Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.
P1846 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.
The transfer case shift motor on an electric shift four wheel drive system carries a contact plate, a multi track encoder that sends discrete position signals back to the 4WD control module so it can determine the current range such as two wheel drive, four wheel drive high, and four wheel drive low. Contact Plate A is one of these feedback channels, and the module reads its state to track shift motor position. DTC P1846 sets when the module detects an open circuit on the Contact Plate A signal, meaning it loses that position input and can no longer reliably confirm what range the transfer cas...
