About C1896

C1896 is a manufacturer-specific chassis diagnostic trouble code recorded for Ford vehicles. It belongs to the C-prefix family of codes, which covers chassis, braking, steering, suspension, or stability-control faults.

When C1896 is stored, the module has detected a short-circuit (voltage pulled to ground or to supply) in the monitored circuit; and a sensor-related fault — the reported value from the named sensor is out of spec.

Scanning & clearing: Chassis (C) codes are stored in the ABS, traction control, or stability-control modules. An enhanced or OEM-level scan tool is usually required to read and clear them.

C1896 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.

Code Information

The air suspension control module, on many Ford applications the Vehicle Dynamics Module, monitors a ride height sensor at each corner to control air spring fill and venting. DTC C1896 sets when the module detects the left rear height sensor signal circuit shorted to ground, so the returned signal sits below the valid range expected for any real suspension position. The height sensor is a three wire device supplied a 5 volt reference and a ground, and a signal wire chafed against a grounded surface or a connector bridged by corrosion will pull that signal to near zero volts.
