4WD electric clutch relay open or short to ground
P1824 — 4WD electric clutch relay open or short to ground
System: Powertrain | Type: Manufacturer-Specific | Make: Ford
P1824 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for Ford vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.
When P1824 is stored, the module has detected an open (broken or disconnected) electrical path in the monitored circuit; and a short-circuit (voltage pulled to ground or to supply) in the monitored circuit.
Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.
P1824 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.
This DTC sets when the 4WD control module or PCM detects an open or a short to ground in the 4WD electric clutch relay control circuit. The module energises this relay to supply power to the transfer case electromagnetic clutch, which engages or disengages four wheel drive on demand. An open circuit breaks the path the module needs to operate the relay, while an unintended short to ground pulls the control line low, and either condition prevents proper clutch engagement and sets the fault. The driver may find that 4WD will not engage or disengage correctly, that engagement is delayed or incomp...
