DTC P1440 indicates the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a small leak in the evaporative emission, or EVAP, control system on these Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. The EVAP system stores fuel vapour from the tank in a charcoal canister and later purges it into the engine to be burned, and the ECM runs a leak test on the sealed system to check its integrity. This code sets when that test finds a small leak, meaning vapour can escape to atmosphere instead of being contained.
