Camshaft Position Out of Range
P1351 — Camshaft Position Out of Range
System: Powertrain | Type: Manufacturer-Specific | Make: Toyota
P1351 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for Toyota vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.
When P1351 is stored, the module has detected a plausibility fault — the measured value is in the electrical range but is not consistent with expected operating behaviour.
Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.
P1351 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.
This Toyota DTC sets when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the camshaft timing is outside the acceptable range, based on the correlation between the camshaft position sensor (CMP) and crankshaft position sensor (CKP) signals. The ECM compares these signals to confirm the camshaft is correctly timed to the crankshaft both at rest and as the Variable Valve Timing system varies the angle. The code is logged when the VVT system cannot bring the camshaft to the proper angle or when the mechanical timing has slipped, for example a chain that has jumped a tooth or a worn actuator.
