The Engine Control Module (ECM) calculates engine load from two independent sources, the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor which measures pressure inside the intake manifold, and the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor which measures the actual mass of air entering the engine, and it uses the agreement between them as a rationality check on both signals. Under any given engine speed and throttle position the ECM has a calibrated expectation of what manifold pressure should accompany a measured airflow, and vice versa.
