Direct injection petrol and common rail diesel engines use a two stage fuel system, in which an in tank electric lift pump supplies the low pressure side and feeds a camshaft driven high pressure pump that generates rail pressure. The low pressure side is monitored by its own fuel pressure sensor, and on most modern applications the Engine Control Module (ECM) varies lift pump speed through a fuel pump control module to hold that pressure at a commanded target, typically somewhere in the range of 350 to 650 kPa depending on the application.
