Vehicles fitted with a fuel cooler circulate coolant through a heat exchanger in the fuel return line using a small electric pump, protecting the tank, the high pressure pump and the injectors from excessive fuel temperature. The Engine Control Module (ECM) switches that pump on through a relay or a low side driver once fuel temperature exceeds a threshold, and monitors the control circuit voltage to confirm it falls toward ground each time the output is commanded on.
