Vehicles fitted with a fuel cooler use a small electric pump to circulate coolant through a heat exchanger in the fuel return line, protecting the tank, the high pressure pump and the injectors from excessive fuel temperature. The Engine Control Module (ECM) energises that pump through a relay or a low side driver once fuel temperature rises above a threshold, and monitors the voltage on the control circuit to confirm the driver is behaving as expected.
