Many Toyota diesel turbochargers use a variable nozzle turbo whose vanes are positioned by an electric stepper motor, sometimes called the DC motor or VN turbo actuator, driven by the engine control module. DTC P1251 sets when the ECM detects an electrical fault in the step motor control circuit, such as an open, a short, or a commanded movement the motor does not actually achieve. The step motor continuously adjusts the vane angle to control exhaust gas flow across the turbine and so regulate boost, so a fault here directly upsets boost control.
