Transmission Component Slipping/ Transmission Mechanical Transfer Case 4x4 Switch Circuit Failure
P1870 — Transmission Component Slipping/ Transmission Mechanical Transfer Case 4x4 Switch Circuit Failure
System: Powertrain | Type: Manufacturer-Specific | Make: Generic
P1870 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.
When P1870 is stored, the module has detected an electrical-circuit fault in the wiring, connector, or driver associated with the named component.
Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.
P1870 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.
DTC P1870 has two applications depending on the vehicle. In some electronically controlled automatic transmissions it indicates transmission component slipping, where the control module detects a gear ratio or speed error consistent with a slipping clutch or band. In vehicles with a mechanical transfer case and an electronic 4x4 selector, it indicates a fault in the 4x4 switch circuit, set when the module sees no signal change, invalid voltage, or an open or short during a mode selection. Symptoms therefore vary: the slipping application may show flared or harsh shifts, high engine rpm for roa...
