When P1871 is stored, the module has detected a short-circuit (voltage pulled to ground or to supply) in the monitored circuit.

Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.

Code Information

This DTC is specific to a short to battery voltage in the 4x4 mode select switch circuit of a mechanical transfer case system. The powertrain control module or transfer case control module monitors the switch signal circuit and expects defined voltage levels for each valid switch position. DTC P1871 sets when battery voltage is incorrectly applied to the signal circuit, above the expected threshold, indicating an unintended connection between the signal wire and power. This prevents proper mode selection and can cause erratic four wheel drive behaviour along with a warning light.
