The B1629 diagnostic trouble code is set when the Body Control Module or Powertrain Control Module sees the PRNDL reverse input pulled high to battery voltage at a time when the reverse position is not selected, or the input voltage is otherwise inconsistent with battery voltage being applied. The PRNDL switch reports gear lever position to the control modules using a network of discrete contacts, and when the reverse signal wire is shorted to a B+ source the module reads the reverse input as permanently asserted.
