About P1193

P1193 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for Ford vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.

Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.

P1193 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.

Code Information

The Engine Control Module (ECM) drives the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve or its control solenoid through an internal driver circuit, and it monitors the current flowing through that driver. DTC P1193 is set when the ECM detects that the current through the EGR driver has exceeded its normal limit, indicating an over current condition on the control side. This is most often caused by a short to ground or a shorted EGR solenoid winding that lets excessive current flow, though a chafed harness or a partially seized valve drawing high current can also trigger it. To protect itself, the ECM...
