Starter switch, key off voltage high
P1196 — Starter switch, key off voltage high
System: Powertrain | Type: Manufacturer-Specific | Make: Ford
P1196 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for Ford vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.
When P1196 is stored, the module has detected a signal or supply voltage higher than the expected operating range.
Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.
P1196 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.
On this Ford application the Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the starter switch input from the ignition switch to know when the engine is being cranked. With the key off, this starter switch signal should read low or at zero volts. DTC P1196 is set when the ECM detects a high voltage on the starter switch circuit while the key is off, meaning the input is seeing battery voltage when it should not be. This usually points to a stuck or faulty ignition switch, a short to power in the start circuit wiring, or a starter relay that is not releasing. Depending on the vehicle, the condition can c...
