Code Information

The upstream oxygen sensor on these engines is a wideband or broadband lambda sensor rather than a simple switching sensor. It contains a Nernst measuring cell and an oxygen pump cell, and the Engine Control Module (ECM) drives a small current through the pump cell to hold the Nernst cell at its reference value. The size and direction of that pump current is what the ECM actually measures, and it is directly proportional to the air fuel ratio, which is how a wideband sensor can report lambda across a broad range instead of just switching either side of stoichiometric.
