About P1177

P1177 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for Volkswagen vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.

Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.

P1177 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.

Code Information

The Engine Control Module (ECM) uses the oxygen sensor mounted behind the catalytic converter to apply a slow, fine correction to the main closed loop fuel control that runs from the front sensor, keeping the gas leaving the catalyst at the composition the converter needs to work efficiently. Each bank on a V configuration engine has its own front sensor, catalyst and rear sensor, and its own independent correction value. DTC P1177 is set when the rear oxygen sensor correction for bank 1 reaches its adaptation limit, meaning the ECM has applied the maximum trim it is allowed to apply to that b...
