Code Information

The upstream sensor on bank 1 is a wideband, or broadband, oxygen sensor rather than a simple switching sensor. It contains a Nernst measuring cell and an oxygen pump cell, and the Engine Control Module (ECM) drives a small current through that pump cell to move oxygen ions into or out of a measuring chamber so as to hold the chamber at stoichiometric. The size and direction of that pump current is what tells the ECM the exact air fuel ratio, allowing it to measure lambda over a wide range rather than simply seeing rich or lean.
