On Chrysler vehicles, P1197 sets when the PCM finds the Bank 1 downstream oxygen sensor (Sensor 2), located after the catalytic converter, switching too slowly during the catalyst monitor. Unlike the upstream sensor, a downstream sensor normally holds a fairly steady voltage because a healthy catalyst buffers the oxygen swings, yet it must still respond in a timely way when the PCM perturbs the mixture during the test.
