When P1196 is stored, the module has detected an open (broken or disconnected) electrical path in the monitored circuit; and a short-circuit (voltage pulled to ground or to supply) in the monitored circuit.

Code Information

The Engine Control Module (ECM) on the 1.6L engine monitors the ignition switch start signal, the input that tells the ECM the key is in the crank position and the starter is engaged. The ECM uses this signal to apply the correct cranking fuel enrichment and start strategy. DTC P1196 sets when the ECM detects the start signal circuit is open or shorted, so the input does not behave correctly during cranking.
