P1196 — Key Off Voltage High
System: Powertrain | Type: Manufacturer-Specific | Make: Ford
P1196 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for Ford vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.
When P1196 is stored, the module has detected a signal or supply voltage higher than the expected operating range.
Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.
P1196 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.
On Ford applications the PCM monitors the voltage on its ignition switched and keep alive power feeds, including during the key off power down period after the engine is shut down. DTC P1196 is set when the PCM detects a higher than expected voltage on the monitored key off circuit, indicating that a circuit which should be de energised still has voltage present. Common triggers include a stuck ignition switch or relay that keeps a switched circuit powered, a short between a constant battery feed and the switched ignition circuit, or a charging system that is overcharging.
