About P1142

P1142 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for Ford vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.

Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.

P1142 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.

Code Information

This DTC sets when the PCM or Fuel Delivery Module detects a pressure differential across the fuel filter that exceeds the calibrated threshold, indicating a restriction in the fuel supply path. This typically means the fuel filter is clogged or there is an obstruction in the fuel lines, leading to reduced fuel flow. As restriction worsens the engine may suffer power loss, hesitation under load, hard starting, or stalling, and prolonged operation can starve and damage the high pressure pump and injectors. The system warns so the filter can be serviced before fuel delivery is compromised.
