Load calculation too low
P1142 — Load calculation too low
System: Powertrain | Type: Manufacturer-Specific | Make: Audi
P1142 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for Audi vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.
When P1142 is stored, the module has detected a signal or supply voltage lower than the expected operating range.
Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.
P1142 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.
The Engine Control Module (ECM) continuously calculates engine load from the Mass Air Flow and manifold pressure signals and compares it against the load expected for the throttle angle and engine speed. DTC P1142 is set when the calculated load falls below the lower plausibility limit, meaning the engine is measuring less airflow than it should be producing for the current operating point. This generally indicates a restriction in the air path, a Mass Air Flow sensor that under reports airflow, or a mechanical condition reducing the air the engine can draw, rather than a wiring open or short....
