The bank 1 upstream lambda sensor is a wideband type, and unlike a simple switching sensor it needs more than a signal and a ground to operate. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies the sensor with a reference or bias voltage, sometimes described as a virtual ground, which the Nernst measuring cell sits on and against which the pump current is regulated. That reference is what allows the ECM to read air fuel ratio in both the rich and the lean direction from a single sensor.
