The bank 1 upstream oxygen sensor is a wideband, or broadband, sensor built around a Nernst measuring cell and an oxygen pump cell. The Engine Control Module (ECM) drives a carefully controlled current through the pump cell to hold the measuring chamber at stoichiometric, and it reads the size and direction of that current to determine the exact air fuel ratio across a wide range.
