P1181 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for Volkswagen vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.

When P1181 is stored, the module has detected an open (broken or disconnected) electrical path in the monitored circuit; a bank-specific fault, meaning it applies only to one cylinder bank of a multi-bank engine; and a sensor-related fault — the reported value from the named sensor is out of spec.

Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.

Code Information

The bank 1 upstream wideband oxygen sensor does not simply produce a voltage of its own like an older switching sensor. The Engine Control Module (ECM) applies a fixed reference or virtual ground voltage, commonly around 2.5V, to the sensor circuit, and then measures the Nernst cell voltage and the pump cell current relative to that reference in order to calculate lambda. DTC P1181 is set when the ECM detects an open circuit in the reference voltage line to bank 1 sensor 1, meaning the reference is no longer reaching the sensor and every measurement taken against it becomes meaningless.
