The bank 1 upstream lambda sensor on these engines is a wideband type. The Engine Control Module (ECM) supplies the sensor with a reference or bias voltage, sometimes called a virtual ground, which the Nernst measuring cell sits on and against which the oxygen pump current is controlled, allowing the sensor to report air fuel ratio across a wide range rather than simply switching at stoichiometric.
