Low Mass AIrflow Sensor voltage
P1146 — Low Mass AIrflow Sensor voltage
System: Powertrain | Type: Manufacturer-Specific | Make: Volkswagen
P1146 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for Volkswagen vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.
When P1146 is stored, the module has detected a signal or supply voltage lower than the expected operating range; and a sensor-related fault — the reported value from the named sensor is out of spec.
Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.
P1146 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.
The mass air flow sensor produces a signal proportional to the air entering the engine, and the Engine Control Module (ECM) uses it to set fuel and ignition. DTC P1146 is stored when the mass air flow signal voltage stays below the expected range for the running conditions. A low signal tells the ECM the engine is drawing less air than it really is, so the mixture can drift lean. The cause may be a contaminated or worn sensor, an intake restriction, or high resistance in the sensor circuit. Symptoms can include hesitation, lack of power, lean running, surging, and an illuminated check engine l...
