When P1839 is stored, the module has detected an open (broken or disconnected) electrical path in the monitored circuit.

Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.

Code Information

This DTC is specific to an open circuit in the transfer case shift motor control circuit. During a commanded shift or a self test, the control module applies power and ground to the shift motor and monitors current flow and voltage feedback. DTC P1839 sets when no current is detected, indicating a break in the power feed, the ground, the motor windings, or the wiring between them. An open circuit prevents the shift motor from moving the mechanism, so the transfer case cannot change modes and may be stuck in its current drive mode with a four wheel drive warning light illuminated.
