About P1189

P1189 is a manufacturer-specific powertrain diagnostic trouble code recorded for Ford vehicles. It belongs to the P-prefix family of codes, which covers engine, transmission, emissions, or fuel-system faults.

Scanning & clearing: A generic OBD-II scan tool will usually read and clear powertrain (P) codes. For live data, freeze-frame capture, and bi-directional tests you may need a more capable scan tool that supports the vehicle's ECM protocol.

P1189 is a manufacturer-specific code. The same code string on a different make may have a different meaning. Always confirm the code's definition against the vehicle's service information for the specific make and model under test.

Code Information

On returnless electronic fuel systems the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) commands the fuel pump through a Fuel Pump Driver Module (FPDM), and the FPDM reports a pump speed or monitor signal back to the PCM confirming the pump is running at the commanded rate. DTC P1189 is set when the PCM detects that this pump speed feedback signal is missing, out of range, or does not match the commanded pump operation. The fault usually stems from the feedback wiring between the FPDM and PCM, a failing fuel pump or driver module, or poor power and ground to the pump circuit. Because the monitor signal is h...
