On Mazda push button start systems, in addition to the data communication link between the Keyless Entry Module (KEM) and the Steering Lock Unit (SLU), the SLU provides a discrete hardware status signal back to the KEM that reports the physical locked or unlocked state of the steering column. DTC B1026 (status signal lost variant) sets when the KEM reads the status line as absent, floating, or in an invalid state while other communication with the SLU is present or expected, meaning the KEM cannot confirm that the column is actually in the state it has commanded.
